Project Reassurance Conducted in partnership with the March of Dimes , chapters sponsor workshops and other activities that assist pregnant teens and educate teen mothers about the importance of pre-natal and post-natal care, and to better understand infant care and child development. Rejesta V. Perry Birthright Program Chapters conduct activities and services dedicated to helping young people gain access to health, educational and social services needed to start them on their journey to a healthy, productive adult life. Special emphasis on substance-abused mothers who have AIDS and/or who are HIV positive. Wee Savers National projects to educate young people about how to use their personal finances. The program sponsors trips to financial institutions, seminars on finance and learning projects. Youth Symposium A program that recognizes that the talents and experiences of today’s youth can be harnessed to address today’s problems. Chapters sponsor a forum for youth and professionals to talk with one another about ways to tackle issues including, drugs and teen pregnancy. This event is held simultaneously, by chapters internationally, on the first Saturday in March. Mwanamugimu Essay Contest The primary goal is to increase the knowledge of young people about the historical and contemporary development of African nations. The secondary goal of the program seeks to improve the writing and research skills of students. Chapters sponsor local essay contests that usually include awards programs. Regional contests are also held with winning essays announced at regional conferences. OPERATION BigBookBag In conjunction with the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Incorporated, this program was developed in 1996 by Grand Basileus, Dr. LaRona J. Morris. It is a program to get supplies to needy school children. The program has already begun with each region participating at their Regional Conference in 1997. Judie M. Davis Bone Marrow Recruitment Program Focuses on donor recruitment drives and educating the African American Community about the importance of donating bone marrow. Habitat for Humanity International A joint partnership effort established in February 1994 that will build low-income housing in various cities. Project For Africa In Conjucntion With Africare A program to provide African women, who produce more than 75% of the food grown on the continent, with grain grinders. This program is in conjunction with Africare. Buckle Up America The sorority’s newest project. Sigma received $50,000 in funding from the federal government to provide programming and increase awareness in the community on the importance of buckling up and to try and decrease the number of people, especially children, who die in car crashes.
